As we enter the age of machine intelligence, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype of technological advancements and the convenience they bring. We're constantly surrounded by new applications, from self-driving cars to virtual assistants and generative media. But with all this automation and simulation, we risk losing something vital: authentic and physical human connection.

AI against Social

In a world where we can talk to chatbots 24/7, it’s easy to forget the value of having a heartfelt conversation with someone face-to-face. We might spend hours scrolling through social media and be blown away by AI-generated content, but how often do we go out to explore the world and enjoy the real beauty beyond the screen? As technology continues to advance, are we becoming more isolated and disconnected from one another?

Humans as social creatures crave connection, interaction, and a sense of belonging. And while AI might be able to imitate human-like interactions, there’s no substitute for being sentient (or at least not yet). Researches have shown that social isolation and loneliness can have serious negative effects on our health, both physical and mental. In fact, some studies have even suggested that chronic loneliness can be as damaging as smoking or obesity.

But what if we could use AI, to actually foster real and physical human connection? It may seem counterintuitive, but AI has the potential to facilitate more genuine and meaningful interactions in society.

AI for Social

The first use case is personalized recommendations and matchmaking. By analyzing data from users’ input and other sources, AI algorithms can identify potential friends, romantic partners, or communities based on shared interests and values. This technology can help people connect with others who they should but might not have met by chance, opening up new opportunities for friendship, love, and personal growth.

Another potential application is social robots which are designed to interact with humans in a social capacity, often in ways that mimic human-to-human interactions, especially in healthcare, education, and service. For example, in care homes for the elderly, social robots can be used to provide companionship and emotional support. In schools, social robots can help children with autism to improve their social skills by providing safe and predictable social interactions. Even though they lack the emotional depth and complexity of human relationships and can’t replace the unique experiences that come with interacting with other people, social robots (being used in conjunction with real human connection) can be a powerful tool for improving social engagement and connection.

But the potential benefits of AI don’t stop there. AI can also be used to create more inclusive and accessible communities, which can in turn foster real and physical human connection. For example, AI-powered translation software could help break down language barriers, enabling individuals from different cultures and backgrounds to communicate more.

As we live in an era of AI, it’s crucial to remember that genuine human connection cannot be replaced but rather improved. Despite the proliferation of machine intelligence, our humanity remains what sets us apart and makes us uniquely valuable.
